The most popular rose in world history was bred by the famous breeder Meilland in France during the Second World War.
The plant was exported to the USA by unnamed cuttings in diplomatic baggage before the capture of France by the Nazis.
In the American nursery, the flower was propagated and presented to the public in 1945. 
So,  the rose returned to liberated France with peace, so it got the name "Peace"
In some countries it's also called Gloria, Gloria Peace or Gloria Dei
